The Thrift Book: Live Well and Spend Less Who has time these days to research every minute detail of how to live well but frugally I don t and I m pretty sure I m not alone Well now you don t have to I read The Thrift Book from cover to cover when it first came out These days it s my go to reference book for most things I need to know and the bonus is that India writes in an authoritative and witty way with great warmth and coming from an area of having been there and having done all the wrong things and now living happily by doing the right ones Read it, dip into it and enjoy it. Enjoyed this book, parts of it were very interesting. However I felt the same about this book as I did about Shops the last book of India s Thai I read I would of like to have seen mention of Fashion Style nor always easy on a Thrifty budget.Lynn Culver The Thrifty London Guide No Didn t do it for me Didn t help at all I was already following all her advice and STILL broke I really enjoyed reading this book as I found it knowledgeable and interesting on a variety of subjects I d never considered before, especially the money section I think it s a great book for the shelf or even the coffee table as you can keep picking it up and indulging in a different chapter It has helped me to save money. Good fun if a little outdated. Clever Book.Delicious mix of common sense and practicality in a consumer world gone mad Interesting combination of things to do and places to go India Knight is someone I would love to have lunch with. There are simply too many points in this book when you get the impression that the writer is well off financially and simply has a best mate who is also her publisher The book is carelessly edited and seems to have been rushed through without close enough inspection of whether it does what it says it will do.Yes the book itself is made from cheaper quality materials And there are plenty of examples where the reader is encouraged to make their own clothes, household items etc.But the clues are in the detail Too many times the suggestion is to spend money on a worn out vintage, then spend money on expensive trim or accessories which results in a twice paid for mishmash that relies too much on skill and not enough on frugalness What really irritated me were the indignant claims dotted within the book that one must never scrimp on this or buy inexpensive that What happens if the reader can t afford to be as indignant This book is clearly written by someone who doesn t need to scrimp and so doesn t really understand how to truly scrimp It also seems to have overly relied upon online resources Anyone can find websites if they sit at the computer long enough The reason for buying a thrift book such as this one is trying but failing to be, is to learn something about how to save money when money is tight. The author is writing about something she doesn t really understand and it shows.
