This is a great collection Told with humour and lightness, yet still treating the old stories with respect and giving them room to be themselves I don't know too much about welsh folk lore but the one tale I knew (Taliesin) was in there and was a much better telling than the one I had read previously One of my favourite things about it is the sense of place woven into every tale and I look forward to going back to North Wales having read it! The illustrations are simple and evocative and compliment the writing What can you ask? My copy is very dogeared from use and abuse reading it to children.

Picked this off the shelves recently to read to my 8 year old who absolutely loves it, giggling at the jokes and asking if we can go and visit the places in the stories (we don't live anywhere near North Wales unfortunately) It reads very well out loud, but the text is simple enough for him to read to himself too The author has included a great range of folktale, myth and legend, including several King Arthur tales and a story from the Mabinogion The simple black/white pictures are lovely too.

Collins retells a few of the great old Welsh tales for young ones She's brought the stories right into the present She knows her craft and does the storytellers work of judging her young audience well Her voice is authentic and speaks to children, but me as adult as well I like these good old tales told close up into my face!
