A career in fashion, a love of fabrics, a lifetime making clothes, a keen sense of styles that work for women of all ages and shapes this is the perfect cocktail of skills and passion that make Frances Tobin s patterns for The Maker s Atelier so successfulFor this book, Frances has designed eight essential patterns, with variations to create a collection of 31 versatile pieces The collection is mix and match, offering lifestyle outfits for office days to weekend dog walks to elegantly glamorous evening wear, including a stretch pencil skirt, a pair of cigarette pants, a drape front top and an over sized t shirt Key fashion trends are refined to create stylishly simple shapes, now staples in the wardrobes of thousands of women, and then translated into dressmaking patterns that make up easily into garments Patterns are in a range of sizes, from UK sizes 8 to 20, with information on measuring and fitting, and advice on fabrics Only simple sewing skills are needed, and clear illustrations guide you through making each piece, so you can confidently concentrate on creating your own essential collection. I have had this book for a year now When I first got it, I thought the patterns were a bit too simple One year on and I have made nearly all of them, and some of them 3 times The patterns are exquisitely drafted and are incredibly flattering They are also simple and quick to make It s probably the best value sewing book I own. I bought this simply because it was value for money with the patterns included but the book is a joy Lovely and clear instructions, even for the beginner.I am quite an experienced dressmaker, and buy Vogue patterns, but I love the way Frances talks about fabrics, a knowledge that most pattern makers expect you to have.My older sister has just inherited a Bernina Record from the 60 s and has absolutely no idea, but she has made the skirt and trousers with only minimal supervision, and took on board Frances instructions about fabrics. When taking the book with me when I bought fabrics for a number of the projects, the male assistant in the shop was intrigued and I let him have a look while I made my choices He makes womenswear for his friends and was very impressed with the simple styles and their ability to suit all shapes and sizes. It is obvious care has been taken in the finished product, and it is a lovely addition to anyone s bookcase. Lovely designs and clear instructions but it s a bit of a faff to trace off the pattern pieces as they are printed on both sides of the paper so you can t cut them out You need to buy a pack of dot cross paper or white tissue paper sheets with this book.
