A brilliantly quirky and affectionate look at a British institution Wetherspoon Pubs and their incredible carpets If you ve ever been in a Wetherspoon s and who hasn t , you ve probably looked down and noticed the brilliantly hued carpet beneath your feet But that carpet isn t just for disguising spilt drinks Each Wetherspoon has a carpet that is unique and bespoke, with a design inspired by the history of the building, its locale or the name of the pub Thanks to the hit blog Wetherspoon s Carpets which posed the important question are any two Wetherspoon carpets the same these tapestried hymns to British boozers have become a cultural sensation Now, Kit Caless has travelled the length and breadth of the UK, from Berkshire to Renfrewshire, Bradford to Bridgend, to photograph oversplendid carpets from Wetherspoons and meet some of the pubs regulars Each entry appears in all its glorious colour, along with Caless s witty and informative text on the inspiration for each carpet s design, the history of the pub and key facts about the branch and its regularsWill your Spoons be there There are two types of people in this world, a person who understands why you need a book about spoons carpets and those who scoff that such a book exists Every spoons carpet is individual to that particular pub and captures the individual local history I bought this book thinking that it would contain every spoons carpet but as there are over 800 spoons, that would not be possible Instead you get 70 carpets and for each one the author provides a taxi drivers take with a pinch of salt commentary On a recent visit to the liberty bounds spoons near the Tower of London, this book was in a frame next to a section of carpet from that pub the fact that the liberty bounds carpet is not featured in that book scarcely matters It amused me that the first spoons magazine I read after acquiring this book had news of 3 featured pubs that had changed the design of their carpet since being included on this book Plus a few featured pubs have sadly closed but at the end of the day you can judge the quality of any visitor to your place by how they react to seeing this in your book shelf and if they mock you, show them the door. The text is what I would describe as jokey rather than informative I expected information on how the pub names originated and from that how the designs for the carpets were arrived at In some case, there is an attempt to do this but it is not consistent throughout the book My initial interest arose after staying in a Wetherspoons in Andover which used to be the premises of the local newspaper and I was fascinated to learn that their unique carpet was made from paper to reflect the history of the site I didn t know up to this stage that all Wetherspoons have unique carpets and wanted to learn but was disappointed with the contents This pub was, unfortunately, not included in the book On the plus side, the book is well produced with exceptional photographs of each of the carpets described Maybe I should set my own target to visit every Wetherspoons in the country and do my own research My Dad was over the moon with this book As well as all the initial hilarity based on its concept, it has facts about each pub and even goes into detail about how they make the carpets Great litter book.
