A stunning record of the Great Central railway with over 300 superb photographs depicting places on the line as they were in action and as they became in states of loss and dereliction following the closure of the line hence then and now The illustrations are filled with pathos, hauntingly real showing the life and the death of a once well loved British railway line The endpapers reveal a detailed map of the GC and its connections An example of what you get in the 300 or so illustrations is the front cover which depicts Loco Jubilee class 45735 Comet having just past Brackley viaduct in 1964 and beneath it the same location as it became some years after closure, a ghostly wasteland, you will see images like this, taken from the same spot, all the way through the book It is a brilliant photographic record and I have seen nothing else quite like it, comparing the alive past with the derelict new I found one of the amazing examples on page 79 photo group 57 comparing a steam train thundering through the tunnel at Weekday Cross Junction, Nottingham and beneath it some years later overgrown with a wall, a bird bath and an empty park bench This is a book not just for lovers of the old Great Central, but also of black and white photography, architecture, life and decay, modernisation and the comparisons of life then and now.

One of my favourite books on The Great Central Railway, very well researched, the maps, photos etc all tie in, to tell a sad story of a railway that should not have been closed by BR Midland Region and Dr Beeching.
