Bread, Cash, Dosh, Dough, Loot Call It What You Like, It Matters To Christians, Love Of It Is The Root Of All Evil To Generals, It S The Sinews Of War To Revolutionaries, It S The Chains Of Labour But In The Ascent Of Money, Niall Ferguson Shows That Finance Is In Fact The Foundation Of Human Progress What S , He Reveals Financial History As The Essential Back Story Behind All History As an economic historian and now a television and publishing star, he gives value for money this is the book to accompany his latest Channel Four programme of the same name. After a long introduction, he looks at the possibility of and the idealistic notion of a moneyless world Quoting Engels and Marx, he examines historically Humankind s early years and the idealistic communist societies in which goods will be freely available and free of charge before concluding a moneyless world would be far worse than today s This leads naturally to the rise of the banking and bond world. He looks closely at what he sees as the unusual worlds of hedging, stock markets, financial bubbles and so on in which, quoting Skilling, the ex Enron chief, all that matters is money You buy loyalty with money. In chapters entitled Safe as Houses and From Empire to Chimerica , he examines modern financial phenomena At 450 pages, it is a thorough examination of our use of money and, although readers may not agree on his conclusions or some of his facts, it is an interesting, challenging re examination of dosh, loot, lucre, the root of all evil or the secret to happiness. The author has done an excellent job here, tracing the role of money in our lives right back to the earliest times History has shown that our financial system is far from perfect, with booms, busts and various crises The section concerning the sub prime mortgage crash is particularly interesting because I think we are still feeling the effects of it today A lot of food for thought here and I enjoyed reading it very much. An interesting look into the finanical world and History of Money The author makes a potentially boring subject accessible and interesting I certianly came away from reading the book better informed and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in History, Finance and Politics. Once again Mr Ferguson displayed his literary skill to sustain readers avid interest from page one to the end of this masterpiece.Moving from his usual realm of history to the world of finance he demonstrated his rajor sharp intellect and oceanic depth of knowledge even in this uncharted water. For fans of Niall Ferguson this book like all his other writings will be a precious possession.Go ahead and buy the book. You wont be disappointed. We are all interested in money even if we are not investing in the stock market or on a mortgage This excellent book explains how money started from bartering , why the gold standard was a hot political issue and most recently how the process of securitization in the US took poor risk mortgages and created havoc in the economies of the world It does not assume any prior knowledge and is well referenced if you want to tske any point further Good value and a good read. I have enjoyed this book so much that I have it in paper and kindle Found it fascinating to understand where modern financial instruments come from and how they evolved into what we have today for the good and the bad. Possibly the most engaging and interesting historical book I have ever come across From very early to until the end, the story of money is exciting and page turning Would strongly recommend to anyone even if this may not be your typical book.
