Breaking Down Breaking Bad: Unpeeling the Layers of Television's Greatest Drama Few television shows have won critical acclaim on the level of Breaking Bad, perhaps because few series are as worth deep examination as Breaking BadSomething about Walter Whites struggle with his inner demons resonated with us The idea that his foray into meth production was not merely a dalliance with darkness, but was actually a full blown awakening intrigued us And most of all, the idea that we came to have no respect for the protagonist of our favorite show utterly fascinated usWe couldnt look awayBreaking Down Breaking Bad attempts to poke into the dark corners of Walter Whites mind, explore the traits that make this show special, and revels in the joy of what is arguably the best drama ever to appear on television In doing so, it also peels back the layers of what makes characters like Jesse Pinkman tick, explores why we were so drawn to characters like Gus Fring and Mike Ehrmantraut, and relives some of the greatest moments of this already legendary showBecause the show may be gone, but the conversation about it certainly isntEric San Juan is the coauthor of A Year of Hitchcock Scarecrow Pressand Hitchcocks Villains Scarecrow Press, as well as Geek Wisdom Quirk Booksand other books Before Breaking Bad came along, he thought Deadwood was the greatest thing since sliced bread He still thinks its pretty damn good

Those who have rated Breaking Bad as one of the best shows to ever hit the small screen will love this reminder of the characters and plot lines It is a pretty straightforward recount of the who, the what and the how with excellent summaries of the action episode by episode throughout all 5 6 seasons It goes deep enough into the minds and motivations of the principals without unnecessary psychobabble A great memento for those of us coming to terms with the fact that it s all over.

Book a bit thin and flimsy but a good read and lots of interesting facts.

Very interesting facts about the best TV series ever produced by the Americans Deals with each series and the characters, plot development and adds lots of little known facts to the story A good read.

    excellent love it

  5. Colin Campbell Colin Campbell says:

Exactly as the title of the book describes.A detailed study of the characters and desperately immoral measures to survive.

  6. Alison Cope Alison Cope says:

A very good book which takes you through the series and reminds you of events and gives commentary and reasoning for Walt s gradual degradation My only complaint, it was so good I finished it too quickly.

What an eye opening read Not many shows have affected me the way breaking bad has, and I think this is a worthy read for anyone who wants to delve deeper into these flawed and complex characters.

I examined the look inside this book carefully before buying Kindle edition I enjoyed the book I m a fast reader and the 100 pages flew by San Juan does a skilful job of writing about the addictive aspects of the series that grabbed many of us and pulled us into Walter White s fictional world of meth and all the characters that populate this dangerous take on the life.I have to give it 4 stars. There s a couple reasons The book is a very good read but it s just too short No book that discusses one of the most powerful and intricate TV shows ever, can discuss it adequately in only 100 pages. Moreover, the reader has already realized many of the books explanations and answered most of the questions raised About the only thing I found out I didn t know was the reason Walt dumped Gretchen Elliot, the Grey Matter guy s wife so long beforeaccording to this book The actress who played Gretchen revealed that Walt must have felt threatened and slightly humiliated to be thrust into Gretchen super rich family s world when he himself had come from such a modest upbringing it was a blow to his ego and Walt was about nothing is not ego that he could not tolerate. The only thing wrong with the book is that it resonates too closely with what many fans of Breaking Bad have already thought and felt It is a drive by analysis that does not dig quite deep enough.

A few weeks ago I finish Eric San Juan s excellent book on the Mad Men TV series which ran on AMC I decided to purchase his earlier bookBreaking Down Breaking Bad from I am glad I did This little book will give you a good analysis of the excellent Vince Gilligan directed series which ran five years The series focuses on brilliant teacher Walter White Learning of his fatal cancer diagnosis he decided to make money to leave his family secure following his imminent demise He and a former chemistry student Jesse decide to cook meth to make a bundle The descent of Walter White from respected family man into a monster is a fascinating journey into the heart of darkness of a human being The series is notable for its excellentwriting, acting and story line The acting of Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and a strong supporting cast make this series a television event Kudos to Eric San Juan for his sagacious and concise comments on the show

Very, very well written by someone who was obviously not only a dedicated fan of Breaking Bad but a stickler for details A dedicated fanatic myself, I read the book in one sitting I felt like I was listening to a friend as I devoured every word I m not sure I could explain it, but there was something about Breaking Bad that kept those of us who loved the series waiting on the edge of our seats each Sunday night When the finale began, I just knew I wanted to be at home, comfortably ensconced on my sofa with 100% of my attention on that final episode It did not disappoint Those last series of scenes could not have been written, directed or acted any better to bring the greatest television series at least in my opinion as well as the author s to it s brutal yet beautiful finality Oh, and one thing I must add Whoever chose the song Baby Blue to end the last scene was nothing short of brilliant Thank you Eric San Juan for a wonderful chance to relive the greatest show on television.

This book was damn near as intriguing as the television series It gave me pause to think deeper on so many levels I understood about the actors, the characters and the whole piece of art I would recommend this book to anyone who is a devotee of the show. You can learn my fellow fans, you can learn.Things that were buried on the screen became so apparent and crystal clear when I read this piece Eric San Juan, hats off to you my friend.A fan forever of yours and Breaking Bad ,Penelope

Nothing earth shattering in this book but it was good conversation material I liked it I didn t answer one question I have had about Walt What made him so risk averse to live the life of a high School chem teacher Since he had aspirations and was so smart What happened in his life to make him go that route Take that Job Be that dissatisfied with his life and just keep doing it.
