No fancy, intellectual review from me, so if that s what you re looking for, pass this review over Susan Hill s writing is superb, and unlike other reviewers I didn t find this disappointing in the least I read it in one sitting, couldn t put it down once started, I was drawn into Olive s life and had to know where it was going And where she ended up seemed just right for her, in the end She came through the trauma of unmarried motherhood, giving up a child, trying to find out her true sexual identity, thinking she perhaps ought to conform but knowing she couldn t But by the end of the novel she was at peace with herself, liked herself it seemed to me, and found the life she really wanted That s what we all hope for, isn t it

I am giving this slim novella by Susan Hill four stars because the detached style of the writing is entirely in keeping with the removed state of victims of trauma and Olive the protagonist is a victim of serial trauma. She is also a survivor Hill as always is thifty with her words and the story moves swiftly with truncated chapters through the early formative years of her womanhood The tale resonates with loss and a quiet stoicism Even when at their most depleted human beings have the capacity for giving of themselves A tale of transformative trauma simply told.

How does she do it The diversity of the work is astonishing She can do ghost stories at the standard, if not quite frankly better than MRJames , detective fiction, romance, historical and amazing sequels to classic novels It s difficult not to be in awe I have read a lot of her books and everything she has published as regards fiction in the last twenty years, but waited before reading this one, because the publishers summary didn t inspire me at the time I am so glad I looked again I read the book in two lengthy sittings Everything about the novel and the feelings the characters express and the historical detail and attitudes of the time rings true Hill is a genius whose work will continue to gain in reputation as the years pass Two hundred years from now people will discuss her work in the same way that we discuss Bronte and Austen now There are so many clever techniques in operation here The writing style, which although straightforward is beautifully poetic, wise and thought provoking, the Bleak house repetitive phrase during a crucial moment in the novel s development and on and on She is a national literary treasure and we are lucky to have her Beyond recommended

I am a great fan of Susan Hill, but this book was a disappointment Mostly because I didn t feel much empathy for Olive, the main character I chose the book because it was set in the 50s, and although it was true to the period it didn t mean a lot, except that the narrow ness of the period was central to the story However, it was quite a compelling read I just didn t enjoy it as much as I expected.

I was disappointed as Susan Hill is such an esteemed author None of the characters seemed fully formed and I couldn t empathise with any It was a sad tale of love, loss, betrayal, heartbreak and prejudice but even with all those components it felt flat.
