    A very, very good read Enough technical detail to satisfy with very honest and open descriptions of the history of Adrian s work and life from his unconventional childhood to the end of 2016 It is interspersed with some great anecdotes and often reads like a novel I have two, albeit minor, criticisms One is the repetitive nature of the Red Bull Vettel dominance years, although this could hardly be otherwise due to the simple facts The other is to do with the illustrations Some are clearly Adrian s freehand and although explain some details well are simply not very well drawn The reast are proper, annotated technical drawings that have been so reduced in size from the originals that you really need a magnifying glass to see what they are illustrating There are also a few, very poor photographs Despite these minor criticisms, the book is absolutely excellent and deserves the full five stars for the written content.

    This book hit the spot 100% Adrian Newey starts with details of his childhood and early life, then gets into his career designing racing cars, with each chapter dedicated to a particular model, obviously chosen for the innovative ideas Newey was able to put into the design Technical details are enlivened by stories from the track, so it is all put into context while making the book much engaging than one would expect for such a technical subject.I found that the level of the technical explanations was exactly right for my level of education, my interest and my knowledge of Formula One It was fascinating to get a competitor s perspective on the sport from a designer rather than the somewhat predictable stories from drivers who tend to concentrate solely on their own performance and their personal relationships.As someone who used to design racing yachts I was intrigued at the similarities between ocean racing and Formula One when competing at the highest level. Maybe this is why Newey is so keen to move on from cars into designing boats for the America s Cup.Perhaps the highest recommendation I can give is that I started reading in the morning and could not stop until I reached the final page in the late evening Car design may be a dry subject but Adrian Newey manages to make it a lively read.

    An excellent read for an F1 fanatic, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, anecdote a plenty.As gods gift to F1, he describes his relevance in the evolution of motor racing technology not just F1 and how he is so important, both historically and today He explains Red Bull s dominance through 2010 2014 describing how he did it the old fashioned way, unlike Mercedes now who just do it with engine power alone hmm I love Adrian Newey, almost as much as Adrian Newey loves Adrian Newey, but not quite as much as Christian Horner loves his best friend Adrian Newey cash cow.That said, he is remarkably candid about his experiences and disparaging of few rivals His perspective during the Williams Senna incident is fascinating.He describes himself as if he is an extrovert, but despite reading this book I don t see it I see him as an introvert innovator, a genius aerodynamisist engineer nerd I ve seen many interviews with him over the years, and his book persona does not match up.Anyway, biases and personal opinions aside This is a superb book, a great trip down F1 memorylane and an insight into his life.I have still no idea how to build an F1 car though..

    As a fan of F1, I was always going to buy and read this book, but my impression of Adrian Newey made me think that it would be a hard slog to read I could not have been wrong Right from the first chapter, this is a light and compelling biography, with some genuine laugh out loud moments, coupled with a very well judged level of detail into the technical work for which Newey is famous The book also contains many of his hand crafted sketches for car developments, giving the reader a feel for how he thinks and how he communicates his ideas to the teams who make them into the cars we see racing.Every F1 fan should read this book

    A most enjoyable book that entertained and informed on a number of levels I brought knowledge from A level physics and applied maths in 1978 and watching the F1 cars at Brands Hatch, thus an enthusiast and fan with just enough knowledge to be dangerous and had just missed out on the very early days of aero and the wings on stilts.I didn t realise that Adrian Newey had been a race engineer for quite some time, in my ignorance I thought he was just the leading aerodynamicist who had brought Red Bull their run of championships overcoming the handicap of not having the best drivers nor the best engines.I liked reading of how driven he was that he would be just physically present on family holidays whilst mentally far away, changing designs in his head or with paper and pencil, even having a great idea whilst staring out of an aeroplane window I wasn t surprised at the developments in his personal life nor the limited amount of space in the book he allocated to describing them.I found the illustrations and technical descriptions in the early part of the book interesting but by the time we reached the last few chapters the technicalities were far too deep for my limited brain space and short attention span I wasn t expecting great revelations of personal and working relationships the author seems to be very much a self contained engineer rather than a people person but I thought he struck the right balance when talking about characters he encountered along the way just enough titillation to whet the appetite but no huge hatchet jobs.The passage about the design, changes and build of Senna s car were poignant and gave a sense of the demons still within Newey s head.Perhaps only AN would wear goggles to go onto the podium because he didn t like Vettell spraying bubbly into his eyes, a lovely solution to the problem and it made me smile.

    Das Buch ist zwar sehr interessant geschrieben und es gibt gute Einblicke in die Arbeit Neweys Jedoch strotzt es nur so vor kleinen Fehlern, vor allem was die Abl ufe mancher F1 Saisons anbelang Dazu scheint es so, als dass er auch nach 20 Jahren die ein oder andere Niederlage nicht wegstecken kann Zum Beispiel die Saison 1994 1 ist die wahrscheinlichste Ursache f r Sennas Unfall die Lenks ule Die Variante die Newey beschreibt ist anhand der Onboardvideos nicht haltbar Es ist nirgends ein Ausbrechen des Fahzeugs zu sehen, sehr wohl aber sehr seltsame Bewegungen des Lenkrades, welche eben sehr danach aussehen, dass es nicht mehr wirklich fest befestigt ist.2 ist mittlerweile nachgewiesen, dass der Benetton keine Traktionskontrolle besa Der Men punkt existierte zwar noch in der Software, jedoch war dahinter keinerlei Software mehr vorhanden welche man h tte aktivieren k nnen.3 Bodenplatte Spa 1994 Die Bodenplatte an Schumachers Auto war nach dem Rennen zwar an einigen Stellen abgeschliffen, jedoch nur punktuell, was durch seinen Dreher zu erkl ren ist In solchen F llen wurde das Gewicht der Platte bestimmt Es durfte 90% des Ausgangsgewichts beim Start nicht unterschreiten, was auch nicht der Fall war Sie war somit innerhalb der Regeln Interessanterweise gab es davor einige Rennen, nach denen die Platten anderer Autos nicht innerhalb dieser 90% lagen, ohne dass sie eine Strafe bekamen.4 Saison 2000 Es waren zum Zeipunkt des US Grans Prix noch 3 Rennen zu fahren und nicht 2 In diesem Rennen lag Hakkinen auch nicht dominant in F hrung als er ausfiel, sondern 4 Sekunden hinter Schumacher Die WM wurde so auch nicht nur durch Zuverl ssigkeitsprobleme entschieden, sondern weil Ferrari und Schumacher am Ende die Rennen klar f r sich entschieden haben Auch hier schiebt er die Niederlage auf Dinge die so nie passiert sind.5 In China wurde 2004 zuerst gefahren, nicht 2005.Es ist wirklich interessant, dass Herr Newey sich mit seinen Autos zwar st ndig in Grauzonen des Reglements bewegt und seine Autos manchmal auch nicht ganz legal waren, er jedoch immer dann die anderen Autos als eben nicht legal ansieht obwohl heute das Gegenteil bewiesen ist , wenn er nicht gewinnen konnte.Ein Buch dass derart viele ungenauigkeiten aufweist, selbst wenn man nur den historischen Ablauf der einzelnen Rennen und Saisons nimmt, hat keine 5 Sterne verdient

    Libro immancabile per gli appassionati di automobilismo, soprattutto F1 Adrian Newey una leggenda che, con le vetture da lui disegnate, ha portato alla vittoria campioni del calibro di N.Mansell, A.Prost, M.Hakkinen e S.Vettel.Il libro in inglese scritto in modo autobiografico riportando aneddoti di vario tipo e mostrando anche schizzi a mano fatti da Newey stesso.Nota di merito per , che mi ha fatto il regalo di spedirlo con due settimane di anticipo rispetto a quanto pronosticato al momento dell ordine

    Pensavo fosse la classica autobiografia, condita anche di retroscena sulla vita e su episodi riguardanti l ingegner Newey Mi sbagliavo, questo libro davvero molto di pi e scoprirlo pagina dopo pagina stato sorprendente Non anticipo nulla, dico solo che non aiuter a capire come costruire una macchina come suggerisce il titolo , ma Quasi.

    Also zun chst mal m chte ich sagen, dass das kein schlechtes Buch ist, falls meine nachfolgende Rezension zu negativ klingen mag Allerdings ist das Buch nicht das, was ich mir vorgestellt habe, und das d rfte vielen Motorsport bzw Formel 1 Fans hnlich gehen.Das Buch besteht in erster Linie aus jeder Menge Anekdoten ber Neweys Leben, viele davon haben wenig oder gar nichts mit Rennautos zu tun, insofern ist der Titel des Buches ein wenig misleading.Des weiteren stinkt dieses Buch nur so von Eigenlob Jeder technische Erfolg geht ausschlie lich auf ihn selbst zur ck, auch nachdem er Teams verlassen hatte und diese im Anschluss noch Erfolge feierten Andersherum ist jeder Misserfolg oder jede technische Fehlentwicklung die Schuld von jemand anderem, aber niemals seine eigene Diese Arroganz ist zum brechen, zumal sie von einem Mann kommen, der bis heute kein CAD beherrscht und mathematische Defizite hat, die normalerweise kein Ingenieur haben sollte.Auch werden findige Interpretationen des technischen Reglements durch andere Teams immer als illegal abgestempelt, aber seine eigenen Ideen sind die gr ten den Namen Ross Brawn vermeidet er oftmals wie der Teufel das Weihwasser Auch hegt er klare Pr ferenzen f r und gegen bestimmte Fahrer, wobei ich an dieser Stelle keine Namen nennen m chte.Insgesamt hat mich das Buch nicht zufriedengestellt, da m.M.n viel zu wenig auf technische Details an den Autos eingegangen wird und die beigef gten technischen Zeichnungen ziemlich banal und wertlos sind.Die Person Adrian Newey hat f r mich nach dem Lesen dieses Buches ganz klar an Strahlkraft verloren Er scheint mehr durch sein arrogantes und selbst berzeugtes Auftreten erfolgreich geworden zu sein, als durch technische Genialit t Die Arbeit haben h ufig andere gemacht, aber die Lorbeeren pfl ckt er offensichtlich gerne ganz alleine

    Man erh lt nicht nur Einblicke in Adrian Neweys Lebensgeschichte, sondern auch viele Detailbeschreibungen zur aerodynamischen Entwicklung der Rennwagen, inklusive anschaulicher Zeichnungen Eines der besten B cher, die ich je gelesen habe Insbesondere ist es spannend, direkt im Anschluss Total Competition von Ross Brawn und Adam Parr zu lesen und die Saisons aus zwei Perspektiven betrachten zu k nnen Au erdem war der Einblick bei McLaren aus Neweys Sicht sehr interessant.
