Modern young readers, 11 16, are not likely to be terrified but some of the stories are better than others I was disappointed, maybe because I m an adult but I was looking for inspiration for lessons and I did not find it here Sorry.

I found this a good collection of spooky stories It says ages 8 and up but I would say 12 and up considering some of the content Some stories are better than others.

Many of the stories are quite good, but as an anthology, it doesn t work Neil Gaiman s Click Clack the Rattlebag starts it off on a perfect note, but there s really only one other story The Sideways Lady that seems to come close to matching the creepy, playful tone It s also the only other story that I d consider reading to my 8 12yo kids The Man Who Drew Cats is powerful and beautifully written, but it focuses on a man s response to domestic abuse and infidelity Granny s Grinning is one of the most disturbing stories I ve ever read, and SPOILER it ends with a grandmother essentially making out with her granddaughter The Chimney is effective and age appropriate, but it has a pretty good Santa spoiler, so be aware The one that stuck out like a sore thumb was Lisa Morton s The Chemistry of Ghosts, which read like an uninspired Encyclopedia Brown story. But Randy Broecker s illustrations are great

Even though it s aimed mostly at the YA audience, I actually found this collection of stories very enjoyable Some are outright spooky, some are serious than the others and have much deeper subjects hidden under the facade of an ordinary scary tale, but all of them without exception are very well written and hard to put down I would definitely recommend this anthology to all fans of the genre, regardless of age.
