    This book works fairly well as an introduction to the life of St.Francis It tries to capture the personality and motives of the saint which it does pretty well It certainly spurred me on to read from a different writer Chesterton does reflect an old fashioned style of writing which is rather wordy at times The introduction, lasting some 20 pages, could have been reduced to

    This book gives a greater insight to the type of man st Francis was, his ideals, his life,his love of the poor and a man who had a love of the environment Gods creation it was a book recomended to me after the election of Pope Francis i am very glad it was, and would recomend it to everyone, who like me, wondered why he chose the name francis.

    And his biography of Francis of Assisi is a marvel It is really unlike any biography I have read Chesterton does make you work the way his mind works, his way of phrasing and presenting and contrasting ideas, can be difficult to parse at times, but he succeeded in lifting me to realms I had never imagined.There are many excellent biographies of Francis, and I would suggest reading one or two

    I have never read an account of the life of St Francis Assisi as unique that stirred my soul as G K Chesterton s account of the saint of Umbria Not easy reading but well worth the effort if read slowly with patience.
