I really loved reading this book and had so much fun with the plot The story revolves around Declan Shaw, a mercenary turned body guard out of prison, and Lady Helena Lark, trying desperately to get out of an arranged marriage her parents set up The chemistry between the two characters was amazing and I loved how fierce and determined Helena was in her goals to just be free and live her apple farmer life Helena has tried everything for the past five years, including running away, and pretending to be mad in order to get out of her arranged marriage and nothing seems to be working Her final option is to find another potential duchess to convince the Duke to fall in love with in order to free herself from him Declan is hired as the personal groom to Helena, all the while he is supposed to make sure she makes it down the aisle with the Duke If he fails, he will be sent back to prison and lose the payday that will help his family, the only problem? Helena isthan he could have ever imagined and she’s completely captivated him I loved the story and I loved the characters, I highly recommend this book for all romance lovers! It’s fun, sweet, and just down right romantic as heck!* Thank you Netgalley and HarperCollins Publishers for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review* A Duchess a Day by Charis Michaels is an excellent historical romance that is the first book in a new series: Awakened By a Kiss If the rest of the series is as good as this novel, then I am sure it will be a memorable and popular series I truly enjoyed this entire story There seems to be an overall theme that will tie each book loosely with enchanting fairy tales This did not mirror the fairy tale of Snow White specifically, however the author creatively infused names, themes, locations, and small nods and acknowledgements to that story I have to say it was beyond impressive and ingenious This book takes place around 1816 London, England We get to meet our main characters: Declan Shaw, a mercenary that has been framed, wronged, and employed to make sure that his subject is delivered to the Duke of Lusk for a marriage of conveniences and finances for both families The unwilling participant in this union is Lady Helena Lark Every bit his opposite, she is violently opposed to losing her land, cottage, apple orchard and forest, and the livelihood of its inhabitants to this marriage and a stone transport operation that would destroy all she holds dear Besides, the Duke leaves little to desire He is usually drunk, indifferent, not monogamous, and just distasteful altogether She plans to thwart the Duke's uncle's plans, and Declan's job is make sure she is delivered or else all that he holds dear in his life could be destroyed What neither of them expect is that by force of nature and circumstances, they find that the love and companionship that has always eluded them both, exists, and with one another I loved the plot It was creative, light, romantic, realistic, and engaging The pacing was perfect The obstacles realistic and the outcome fit just right I loved the character cast, and I truly loved both Helena and Declan They were likeable, realistic, both had their own complex pasts/problems, had personalities with hopes and dreams, seemed to compliment each other well, and boy did they have chemistry I have to admit that this is the first book that I have read by this author, however she has truly made a fan out of this reader This book was quick, fun, romantic, creative, interesting, and everything that a historical romance should be I cannot wait to see what Ms Michaels has in store for the next book is this excellent series 5/5 stars Thank you EW and Avon Books/HarperCollins for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to myand BN accounts upon publication. The highest form of humor is sarcasm This story has wit and humor in every paragraph This story started quite grim with the hero in prison for killing a young lady that he was guarding He is a mercenary and he finds, guards and returns people The last young lady that was under his guardianship is missing so he was arrested for murder and plopped in jail The duke's uncle, who is really running the show while his nephew the duke stumbles around drunk and swivving every large breasted woman that he can, hires the hero to make sure the duke's betrothed (who is the daughter of his neighbor) doesn't run away and he will pay the hero £15,000.00 That is millions in the Regency world!! So the hero agrees, and then the heroine is introduced I think she must be at least 25 years old because she states that two of her excuses for not marrying the duke is that she was too young and then was too old She has lived with her grandmother on a seperate part of the estate which she inherited when her grandmother died 5 years before When her parents realized that the only way they could access this prime section of the estate was to have her get married and her husband would sell them the land, they engaged her to the neighbor What a pair of selfish, unloving parents The heroine ran this small estate which was comprised of tenants who worked her large apple orchard It was a self sufficient operation that the heroine was smart enough to make profitable and grow But her parents wanted access to the river that bordered her little estate So she told the hero that her plan to get out of the betrothal was to find a woman who met all of the duke's requirements, have him fall in love with her, then the heroine's betrothal would be ended and the heroine would be free to return to and run her estate as she wanted What a great plan And I am not giving anyspoilers. This was a great story It was well written I laughed out loud when I read it and I really was captivated by the characters It does get a bit sensual, but this is sometimes typical I recommend this book with 5 stars! Lady Helena Lark tried for years to avoid marrying the dull Duke of Lark who her parents want her to marry to use his connections to make a path through the land she was left by her grandmother Land that houses tenants she cares about and her beloved orchard that also provides an income When her family forces her to London, she gets assigned a bodyguard, Declan Shaw For his part, Declan is being coerced by the duke's uncle to get Helena down the aisle or he will end up back in prison Helena devises a plan to find women who want to become a duchess at any cost and enlists Duncan's aide to put the plan in action Declan soon finds Helena irresistible in spite of him trying to stay on task, so he can help his aging father and younger sisters GAH! I loved this book so much!! I love Helena's mind and how funny she was I loved the slow burn of Declan trying to resist her All of it it was so fun and made such an interesting read, because it had twists and turns you didn't see coming I can't wait to read the next one in the series!! ⭐⭐⭐Helena Lark has been trying and failing to prevent her marriage to the Duke of Lusk for five long years Her heart's desire is to preserve the apple orchard on the corner of her family's estate that her grandmother entrusted to her before her death Helena's last resort is to get the duke to overthrow his controlling uncle and jilt her for a woman of his choosing She plans to dangle as many women as possible in front of Lusk in the hope that one enchants him. What Helena did not count on, is the controlling Uncle to hire a mercenary out of prison to pose as her groom Helena has to convince Declan, her groom, to take her side and help her in her desperate plan Somehow along the way they fall in love and have to figure out a sure way to save Helena from a marriage to Lusk. This story is a reinvented Snow White retelling It was entertaining, but I found myself not connecting with the characters There was just too much going on with all the potential heiresses and Helena and Declan running around It just felt so contrived and illogical I recieved a copy of this book from Netgalley This is my honest review. The second sentence in chapter one made me laugh and right then I just knew I was going to love this book It at times had me laughing and the best part of it was the awesome characters! The banter and fun of it was spot on We meet Declan in jail since he’s been (falsely) accused of abduction Helena is trying her best to get out of her engagement with a Duke so Declan’s been hired to make sure she doesn’t bolt before the wedding What happens after that is a friendship turning into romance between these two characters who are the perfect compliment to each other This is my first Charis Michaels book but it certainly won’t be my last The writing style, plot, pacing, humor and creativity in this book was a breath of fresh air in the crowded Regency romance field I can’t gush about this book enough and I’ll be looking forward to the next one in the series! Thanks Netgalley for an advance copy! I am new to Charis Michael’s works and when Net Galley allowed me access to a copy I was elated The storyline is a familiar one, a heroine trying to break off an arranged betrothal But it was cleverly written Some terms used are a bit modern but nonetheless enjoyable The hero is in jail and was given freedom in exchange for a job that involves the heroine He is a familyoriented man which I liked about him He is also honorable He has none of the emotionally scarred, Brooding and tormented stereotype which I appreciated a lot The heroine is just awesome She is clever, mature, innocent, down to earth courageous and humorous Their chemistry/ combination is just adorable The humor is nice and the development added to the love story It was just a light romance There were times I was tempted to skip a page but overall it was an entertaining story The epilogue was nice too. Lady Helena Lark has spent years trying to escape her wedding to the Duke of Lusk, with no luck Her newest plan: trying to find a replacement bride Declan Shaw is a mercenary whose last job landed him falsely accused and jailed He is blackmailed by the Duke of Lusk's uncle to mind the difficult lady and make sure she makes it to the alter Helena is not what Declan expects, and soon he finds himself siding with her and helping with her outrageous plan. This is a charming story! It is the first of a new series of fairytale reimaginings This one, reminiscent of Snow White, features a Huntsman hero, woodlandloving and apple harvesting heroine, potential duchesses named after the seven dwarves, and an awakening kiss I enjoyed the writing, which was engaging and humorous, and the fun partnership and tension that developed between the heroine and heroine. Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.I thought this was a an entertaining historical romance Declan is pulled out of prison by a man desperate to secure the marriage of his son to a heiress who does not wish to marry him He hires Declan as her bodyguard and spy Of course he agrees but it all goes out the window when he meets the beautiful and willful Helena I loved the sensual tension and comrade that buds between them Helena ensures his help to get the Duke to fall in love with someone else Although Duncan and Helena try to fight the their feelings for each other, they eventually give in The only thing I wasn't crazy about with this novel is Duncan's consistent worry that they would get caught and their future lost It just got old after awhile Otherwise, worth the read.
